Oozaru's strength increase was a censorship issue?

I wouldn't deny that Viz is a truly good source. I would only say that Herms goes a bit more "in-depth," if you will, into his translations. He formats the sentences so we can understand them, but he doesn't deviate from the message, omit anything, and doesn't try to change it so a certain demographic will relate to it more ("Americanization").

I do like some of Viz's changes more than what Herms has provided, such as Piccolo's line about Kaioshin being a different order of being, but you get my point.

Herms' work is far more scrutinized than any other available option... which results in it being possibly the most accurate available option.

...but personally, I prefer it raw (sexual innuendo intended).

If you're going to spend as much time as many people here spend debating/conversing/contemplating DB... you might as well learn Japanese. It's really not that hard.

Viz is pretty good , but not close for being accurate , which Herms is IMO.

I just thought I'd jump in here as a Japanese speaker and say a bit. I'm not familiar with Herms or what he's done, but I will say this much: The original DBZ manga translation that was out there (done by Steve Harmon if I remember correctly) was very good, a bit liberal on translating cuss words (Japanese really doesn't have many and they don't translate well into English anyway). The Viz translation, from what I've read (only the single issue releases) doesn't mistranslate so much as it dumbs down nuances. The FUNi subs on the DVDs don't; again a great example is Goku. Bulma always refers to him as Son-kun, Piccolo always refers to him as Son. The Viz translation will mostly call him Goku, rather than explain the meaning and connotation of name pre-fixes in Japanese. The FUNi subs, however, preserve the nuance (so if you notice, when Piccolo yells at SON! the subs will indeed say Son and not Goku). So if you're in a pinch, I'd say trust the FUNi subs on all things anyway, I think I maybe had one or two little nitpickey issues but they're really accurate. The Viz translation isn't bad, but that older one is better IMHO.

I think you're right, I always mixed them up. One of them was the interview guy and the other was the translator, I deleted those scans years ago when I bought the Japanese volumes so I can't look it up now. I can barely remember what I had for breakfast let alone the 90's.

I think Herms said something like "The VIz translation is only 70% correct". I don't think Herms think he's 100% correct but I'll take Herms over the official subs due to Herms being more accurate
He said he'd give it an arbitrary 7/10 rating with a 10/10 being an impossible perfection translation. Just a little different than saying it was only 70% correct. He's giving it a rating not a percentage of it's correctness.

This is one of the issues I got involved directly with him about over at Kanzenshuu. I said I would trust the Viz over him and we had some exchanges and that's when he said that...I think he admits there's not too many, if any, radically different meanings behind any of the statements in the Viz and that it is acceptable. I just use the strength checker for ease of convenience. It's online lol.

I just don't like this notion that the people who translated it for Viz didn't know what they're doing and that somehow Herms>Viz because of that or something idk i get that vibe from people. I could be mistaken.
7/10...is 70%.. A rating can still be a percentage. Also I think you're mistaken like you've said. Most people use Herms Strength checker not ask Herms for full manga translations . That'll be silly.

I honestly trust Daizenshuu more, really. He's quite reliable, though I disagree with him on a couple of matters

I went out of my way to explain my reasoning so that someone wouldn't go "7/10 is 70%" blah blah blah...he's not saying it's 70% correct. A X/10 scale isn't used to indicate how "correct" something is but the quality of it. Take for instance an exact word by word translation perfectly translated to English...it would be 100% correct but probably get a 4 or 5 out of ten because of the context and syntax of the sentences...it'd be completely correct but get a lower arbitrary rating.

So a 100% correct translation of all words to English can still be an imperfect translation...hence why Herms said a 10/10 on his scale would be an "impossible perfect translation" not a 100% correct one.
